You wouldn't know it by looking at me but I love dog mushing. I think the sport, and it is a sport, is one of the hardest out there. Between the cold and the snow and the dogs it's a pretty grueling thing to race across hundreds of miles with a team of 10 to 15 dogs.
Right now I am sympathizing with Lance Mackey on the injuries suffered by his team this past Saturday. Zorro, his lead stud, was hit the hardest by the snowmobilers. Mr. Mackey flashed his headlamp at them but they disregarded the warning. I'll give them credit for stopping and assisting Mackey after they hit him, the sled and the four dogs. However, they should have been more considerate.
I hope there is some form of legislation that prosecutes reckless driving with a snowmobile. If there isn't perhaps it is time. These people are responsible for the deaths of mushing dogs every year. The loss is not necessary. If they will not act responsibly the time has come for them to have consequences for their indifferent behavior.
